Types of Electronic Calipers

There are several types of calipers made for all sorts of applications.

IP code rated calipers will specify a International protection rating on the caliper of two digits.  Examples are IP54, IP65, and IP67 digital calipers.  The IP code rates the calipers protection against solid objects such as dust and water.  If you are measuring objects in a humid environment, then the IP code becomes relevant.

First digit of IP Code
5 - Protects against dust and contact to not interfere with operation, but not complete protection.
6 - Rated dust tight. Complete dust and contact protection.

Second digit of IP Code
4 - Protected from splashing water.
5 - Protected from water jets.
6 - Protected from powerful water jets.
7 - Can be immersed in water up to 1 meter.

If you need a to make fine measurements, then the type of caliper you need is a high precision caliper.  Most calipers measure to .01mm accuracy.  With a high precision caliper, you can have a resolution of up to .001mm.

Specialty calipers are also available for specialized measurements.  These calipers have jaws specifically designed to make certain measurements such as groove measurements, gear tooth, thread pitch, pipe thickness and more.
